In Forbes’ 19th iteration of the “America’s Top Colleges” ranking, just one Chippewa Valley university cracked the 500-school list: the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.
Coming in at No. 280 – up three places from last year’s list – UW-Eau Claire’s new chancellor, Dr. Ed Martini, pointed to “the collaboration at the heart of faculty-mentored undergraduate research” as one key element of the institution’s inclusion and ranking.
As Forbes states in the list’s introduction, higher education in the U.S. faces “ever greater scrutiny” as attendance costs grow, federal student loan borrowing limits lower, artificial intelligence disrupts the post-graduate job market and more.
“But the good news is a solid undergraduate education still pays off,” Forbes wrote, “and America’s Top 500 Colleges identifies those schools that produce the best academic and career outcomes for students from all economic backgrounds.”

2027 AMERICA’S TOP COLLEGES RANKING
Forbes’ methodology – used to evaluate 1,600 four-year institutions – considers “return on investment, average student debt levels and outcomes for their graduates.”
“Schools ranked highly on our list if their students returned after their first year, graduated on time, secured high salaries after graduation and left college with little student debt,” Forbes states. Its full methodology info can be found online.
Notably, UW-Eau Claire is only regionally outperformed on the Forbes ranking by the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Marquette University and the University of Minnesota Twin Cities.
UW-Eau Claire’s overall placement is No. 280, but if only public colleges and universities are considered, that bumps the Blugolds up to No. 132.
The top five public universities and colleges in Wisconsin, per Forbes, includes in order: UW-Madison, UW-Eau Claire, UW-La Crosse, UW-Platteville and UW-Oshkosh.
In its profile of UW-Eau Claire, Forbes says the university “emphasizes undergraduate education, research and experiential learning,” offers faculty-mentored research and internship opportunities, a wide array of studies subjects and notes “Eau Claire itself is known or its music and arts culture, giving students opportunities to connect their academic and extracurricular interests with the surrounding community.”
