LONDON: Barclays has a new job title, and Anita Tanna is the first to hold it. Tanna is taking on the role of Barclays’ first chief AI officer, from October 2026, after nearly three years as group chief of staff to the group chief executive. She made the announcement on LinkedIn.
In her new role, Tanna will lead the group’s approach to AI strategy, adoption and enablement, with a focus on translating the opportunities presented by AI into tangible outcomes for customers, colleagues and businesses.
“AI has enormous potential to transform how we serve our customers and clients and is a critical enabler of our strategy,” Tanna said. She will focus on accelerating adoption across the group and on where the bank can unlock the greatest value, while ensuring it continues to use AI “thoughtfully and responsibly”.
She was grateful for her time in the previous role. “After nearly three incredibly rewarding years as Group Chief of Staff, I’m hugely grateful for everything I’ve learned and for the opportunity to work with so many talented colleagues across Barclays,” she said. She added that there is already great work happening across the organisation and that she is excited about what the team can achieve together.
The new job builds on her experience as group chief of staff and managing director at Barclays, a post she held from January 2024 to October 2026. In that role she worked across strategic, financial and organisational priorities, and partnered with businesses and functions on execution, governance and transformation, including the group’s approach to AI, simplification, automation and standardisation.
Tanna has 22 years in financial services, and her career spans enterprise-wide leadership and extensive experience in the markets business. This includes leading EMEA cash equity distribution, working with hedge fund and long-only clients across global cash equities, prime, delta one products and derivatives, and leading multi-regional sales and sales trading teams.
At Barclays Corporate and Investment Bank she was head of equity sales, high touch and program trading execution services, and managing director, from October 2022 to January 2024. From June 2021 to October 2022 she was head of equity sales, EMEA, and managing director.
Before Barclays, she spent 11 years and ten months at Citi, from September 2009 to June 2021. She started in global equity sales, became head of global sales and managing director in December 2014, and head of international sales and managing director in July 2017, managing the global, US, Asia and emerging market equity sales desks. She was head of equity sales, UK, and managing director, from June 2018. She also served on Citi’s EMEA Markets Diversity Committee from November 2019 and its EMEA Markets ESG Committee from January 2020, both until June 2021.
Earlier, she was an associate at Goldman Sachs from March 2007 to February 2009, selling European equities to hedge funds, and an analyst at Bear Stearns from August 2004 to July 2006, in equity research, investment banks and financials specialist sales.
