KATHMANDU: Families displaced from the Manohara settlement in Bhaktapur have warned of an indefinite peaceful satyagraha (a philosophy and practice of nonviolent resistance) from August 28 if the government fails to address their demands for rehabilitation and land ownership.
The Joint National Landless Settlers Front Nepal, Kathmandu Valley Special Committee issued the warning during a corner assembly held about four months after the settlement was demolished without alternative arrangements.
The Front has put forward three key demands: permanent rehabilitation of displaced families with land ownership, assessment and compensation for property and belongings damaged during the demolition, and immediate dialogue with affected families to publish a time-bound rehabilitation plan.
It has also demanded that holding centers be used only for short-term arrangements and that special protection be provided to women, children, senior citizens, and persons with disabilities.
The Front has announced a series of protests beginning August 7, including memorandum submissions to relevant local government bodies and land problem settlement offices, an appeal to the National Human Rights Commission, a warning assembly at Maitighar on August 20, and an interaction with civil society, political parties, human rights activists, legal practitioners, intellectuals, and media representatives on August 23.
The Front accused authorities of forcibly displacing long-term landless and squatter communities from areas including Thapathali, Shantinagar, Gairigaun, Manohara, and Jadibuti without alternative arrangements or due legal process.
