The Mossos d’Esquadra have identified the 50-year-old woman of Spanish nationality whose body appeared on June 3 in the Segre River, near the Pont Nou in Lleida.
The identification comes after investigators exhausted the usual avenues and resorted to disseminating a composite sketch generated with artificial intelligence and judicially authorized, while the police maintain that it is a violent death without having yet determined if there was a criminal origin.
That step made it possible to put a name to the woman found in the Segre riverbed after several weeks without results through ordinary channels.
The investigation remains open in Lleida. The agents have specified that the death was violent, but for now they have not specified if there was criminal involvement behind the case.
The discovery occurred on June 3 in the vicinity of the Pont Nou, one of the crossing points over the river in the capital of Segrià. In the same line of investigation regarding recent discoveries in the area, the Mossos had already intervened in two bodies in Lleida waters, although the police have ruled out that both cases are connected.
Hours earlier, on the same June 3, the body of an unidentified man also appeared at the gates of the Utxesa reservoir, within the municipal area of Aitona.
In this second case, the Mossos d’Esquadra have ruled out any connection with the woman found in Lleida and have added that the body found in Aitona shows no signs of criminality.
Both discoveries occurred on the same day in two locations in Segrià.
The difference between the two investigations now lies in the initial classification of the events, as in Lleida the police are working with a violent death pending clarification, and in Aitona they have ruled out signs of criminality from the outset.
The body of the man found at the gates of the Utxesa reservoir remains unidentified.
