Former Intel CEO Predicts Quantum Computing Will Burst the AI Bubble – eTeknix
The former CEO of Intel, Pat Gelsinger, has made a bold and controversial prediction, claiming that the AI bubble will be burst by quantum computing.
In an interview with the Financial Times (thanks Wccftech), Gelsinger stated that a major breakthrough in quantum computing will serve as the catalyst that bursts the AI bubble.
Gelsinger described quantum computing as the “holy trinity” of the computing world, alongside classical computing and AI. He believes that quantum computers will become mainstream much faster than most experts expect.
The most striking part of his forecast is the deadline he proposes — Gelsinger is convinced that the currently dominant chips, GPUs, which are essential for training AI models, will begin to be replaced by quantum technology before the end of the decade.
“Nvidia’s Jensen Huang has said it will take two decades for quantum to go mainstream. Gelsinger thinks two years. Whoever is right, ‘we’re heading into the most thrilling decade or two for technologists,’” he told The Financial Times.
Huang does not believe the AI bubble will burst for a few more years but admits that a quantum breakthrough could trigger it sooner.
After leaving Intel, Gelsinger became involved in venture capital, giving him deeper exposure to quantum technology. He believes that as qubits (quantum bits) emerge, current forms of computing — both classical and AI — will become obsolete.
