QUANTUM BREAKTHROUGHS- Teleportation and Speed – Digital Infra Network
1993– a team of IBM scientists led by physicist Charles Bennett, published a paper in the journal Physical Review Letters that would change physics forever: they proved (laid out the theoretical framework) quantum teleportation wasn’t just sci-fi fantasy.
1997– two groups experimentally achieved quantum teleportation. The first group, led by Sandu Popescu, was based in Italy. An experimental group led by Anton Zeilinger followed a few months later.
Decades later,
2025- Scientists at the University of Oxford have developed a scalable quantum supercomputer capable of quantum teleportation.
Quantum Teleportation
This is a breakthrough that addresses one of the biggest challenges in quantum computing: scalability.
Although quantum teleportation has been demonstrated before — with scientists successfully transmitting quantum data without physically moving qubits — this marks the first time logical gates, the basic units of an algorithm, have been quantum teleported across a network link.
The research team suggests this development could lay the groundwork for a future “quantum internet,” enabling ultra-secure communication, computing, and sensing capabilities.
“Earlier work focused on teleporting quantum states between separate systems,” explained Dougal Main from Oxford’s Department of Physics, who led the study.
“In our approach, teleportation is used to create interactions between distant systems. By precisely engineering these interactions, we can perform logical quantum gate operations between qubits located in different quantum machines.
“This breakthrough allows us to effectively link multiple quantum processors, functioning together as one fully connected quantum computer.”
CHINA’s Zuchongzhi-3
Chinese researchers have introduced a groundbreaking prototype of a superconducting quantum computer, which they believe could usher in a transformative era for processors.
Researchers from the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) say the quantum computer operates at a speed that is a quadrillion (1015) times faster than the fastest supercomputer currently available.
The Independent notes that one of the tasks that has become something like a golden standard for testing and comparing quantum computers is what’s called the “random circuit sampling” (RCS) problem.
Researchers emphasize that RCS has emerged as a central area of focus in quantum computing studies, as it highlights the computational superiority of quantum systems.
To compare-
Google’s groundbreaking Sycamore processor created a benchmark in 2019 by completing a random circuit sampling task in 200 seconds.
USTC’s new quantum computer Zuchongzhi-3 has been found to outperform the latest results published by Google in October 2024 by 6 orders of magnitude.
Chinese scientists say Zuchongzhi-3 has a computation speed surpassing that of the world’s most powerful supercomputer by 15 orders of magnitude, “firmly establishing a new benchmark in quantum computational advantage”.
Oxford and China’s breakthroughs reflect how quickly quantum computing is evolving. A technology that once looked futuristic is now tangible enough to shift tomorrow’s realities.
