SPOKANE, Wash. – Spokane Public Schools provided an update Monday on its investigation into September’s “Data Privacy Event” that reportedly had an unauthorized party access and copy files that “may involve information related to SPS staff and students.”
On Sept. 20, SPS found suspicious activity in its internal system, sparking an investigation through third-party cybersecurity specialists. Though initial system disruptions were resolved quickly, the unauthorized party access and copied certain files in the SPS system from Sept. 17 to 20.
While the specific data that was accessed is still under review, SPS says it does not keep social security numbers on file. The district is currently not aware of any reports of identity fraud or fraudulent activity related to the incident.
SPS says it will notify those who were impacted by the breach at the end of the data review. In the meantime, the district recommends monitoring accounts for any suspicious activity.
