The affiliation is intended to strengthen cooperation between educators and workers in other industries on issues such as wages, workplace conditions and collective bargaining.

“This affiliation is an exciting step forward for Nevada’s labor movement and a reminder that the issues facing educators are connected to the issues facing workers in every industry,” Nevada State AFL-CIO Executive Secretary-Treasurer Susie Martinez and President Liz Sorenson said in a joint statement. “We are proud to welcome the Washoe Education Association into our labor family and look forward to building a stronger, more unified movement together.”
Washoe Education Association President Calen Evans said the partnership reflects the connection between public education and the broader workforce.
“Strong public schools and strong communities go hand in hand. The children we educate come from families working in every sector of our economy, and the challenges those families face don’t stop at the classroom door,” Evans said.
Evans said the affiliation would allow educators and other workers to advocate together for public education and working families.
Northern Nevada Central Labor Council President Ross Kinson said the addition of the education association would strengthen organized labor’s presence in the region.
“We are proud that the Washoe Education Association’s thousands of members are now part of the Northern Nevada Central Labor Council,” Kinson said.
Kinson said the organizations share priorities involving compensation, workplace safety and employee representation.
“Now when WEA stands up for students and classrooms, the whole labor movement stands with them. And they stand with us,” he added.
The organizations said the affiliation would provide additional opportunities for coordinated advocacy before the Nevada Legislature, local school boards and during collective bargaining.
