East Carolina University leaders are laying out a new plan to prepare students for a workforce being rapidly changed by artificial intelligence.
The Board of Trustees discussed a campuswide AI strategy, focused on student success, research, and the university’s operations.
Leaders said AI will affect students in every field, from health care and education to business, engineering, and the arts.
ECU has already launched a self-paced AI literacy course for incoming students, covering prompt writing, ethics, university policies, and how to evaluate AI-generated information.
University leaders said the goal is to build on that foundation with AI training tailored to each degree program, along with hands-on experiences outside the classroom.
ECU also recently began rolling out 2,000 ChatGPT licenses to students in selected classes, while students have access to Microsoft Copilot Chat.
The university’s three-year plan aims to make sure ECU graduates enter the workforce as “AI-ready Pirates.”
