NJ AFL-CIO Pushes FAIR Act to Rein In Workplace AI Tools – centraljersey.com
The New Jersey AFL-CIO held a press event outside the Statehouse Annex in Trenton. It backed a bill setting new limits on artificial intelligence in the workplace, according to Insider NJ.
The event marked the formal launch of a labor campaign for the Fair AI Regulations at Work Act, known as the FAIR Act.
NJ AFL-CIO President Charles Wowkanech and Secretary-Treasurer Laurel Brennan led the announcement.
State Senator Andrew Zwicker, a Democrat representing the 16th District, attended as the bill's lead Senate sponsor.
He trained as a physicist and has emerged as the Legislature's primary point person on artificial intelligence policy, Insider NJ reported.
The FAIR Act is formally numbered S-4075 in the Senate and A-4981 in the Assembly.
Zwicker sponsors the Senate version, and Assemblywoman Heather Simmons, a Democrat representing the 3rd District, sponsors the companion bill in the Assembly.
The legislation targets three categories of workplace technology, according to aiunderstanding.org.
Those are electronic monitoring tools, automated employment decision-making systems used in hiring and firing, and automated systems that determine benefits or public services.
The bill does not ban AI outright. Instead, it gives workers a formal voice in how the tools get deployed.
Specific provisions address privacy, discrimination and job security, aiunderstanding.org reported.
Insider NJ described lawmakers in Trenton as trying to avoid alienating either side of the debate. Building trades unions have an interest in data center construction.
Labor advocates, meanwhile, are pressing for worker protections as AI systems spread into hiring and monitoring decisions. The tension runs deep.
That tension has left Zwicker as the Legislature's default AI specialist, a role Insider NJ tied directly to his scientific background.
The FAIR Act now moves forward with organized labor's public backing behind it. Wowkanech and Brennan's appearance at the Statehouse Annex sent a clear signal.
The state's largest labor federation intends to make the bill a priority as AI use expands across New Jersey employers.
