Here's How Cash App Users Could Get Paid From a New Settlement – Complex

Cash App users may be owed money following a series of legal actions against the payment platform—but the latest $45 million settlement is not the one paying customers. Qualifying users could instead receive compensation through a separate federal restitution program covering unauthorized transactions, mishandled fraud claims and reimbursement failures.
According to Newsweek, Cash App parent company Block, Inc. recently agreed to pay $45 million to settle allegations brought by 46 states and Washington, D.C. Regulators accused the company of exaggerating the platform’s security, failing to properly investigate disputed transactions and leaving customers without meaningful support when money vanished from their accounts. Block denied wrongdoing as part of the agreement.
Despite the settlement’s size, Cash App users cannot file claims against the $45 million fund. That money will be paid to the participating states. Consumer payouts are tied to an earlier Consumer Financial Protection Bureau order requiring Block to provide at least $75 million in restitution. Depending on the number of affected customers and their losses, the total could climb to $120 million.
Eligibility generally centers on Cash App users who experienced unauthorized transactions or were wrongly denied assistance, an investigation or reimbursement. Customers who believe they qualify should watch for official notices from Cash App or the CFPB and avoid unsolicited calls, texts or emails promising an immediate payout.
Cash App’s past customer-service gaps became part of the problem: State investigators said scammers created fake support numbers to target users who could not easily reach the company.
“Cash App told people their money was safe, and millions of Oregonians and Americans believed them, including a lot of people who didn’t have other options,” Oregon Attorney General Dan Rayfield said. “When things went wrong, Block left them with nowhere to turn.”
Under the new settlement, Block must strengthen fraud prevention, improve investigations and expand customer support. The company agreed to provide 24-hour assistance, with live phone agents available for at least 13.5 hours per day and chat support operating for 18 hours.
This is not Cash App’s first major payout. A separate $15 million class-action settlement followed security incidents disclosed in 2022 and 2023, including one involving a former employee who accessed information connected to roughly 8 million investing customers. Certain users were allowed to seek up to $2,500 for documented losses and related costs.
