UnitedHealth Group has appointed Shobhit Varshney as its new Chief AI Officer, marking a significant leadership addition as the healthcare company continues to strengthen its artificial intelligence capabilities across its operations. In his new role, Varshney is expected to help advance AI-led innovation within the organization, with a focus on improving healthcare delivery and outcomes through technology.
Varshney joins UnitedHealth Group after serving as Global Head of AI at Citi, where he was responsible for shaping the financial institution’s enterprise-wide artificial intelligence strategy. His responsibilities included developing the company’s AI operating model, establishing governance frameworks, and advancing responsible AI initiatives while supporting the adoption of AI technologies across the organization.
With more than two decades of experience spanning artificial intelligence, enterprise technology, digital transformation, and innovation, Varshney has built a career leading large-scale technology initiatives across multiple industries. Before Citi, he spent more than 13 years at IBM, where he held several senior leadership positions. During his tenure, he progressed to become Head of Data & AI, Vice President and Senior Partner, after previously serving as Partner and Americas Head of AI as well as Associate Partner and Consultant. In these roles, he led enterprise AI transformation programs for major global organizations, helping businesses integrate AI into their operations at scale.
Beyond IBM and Citi, Varshney has also held leadership positions at Bloomberg and Intel, further expanding his expertise in enterprise technology and innovation. He also has entrepreneurial experience, having co-founded a green manufacturing venture, adding a business-building perspective to his technology leadership background.
At UnitedHealth Group, Varshney will leverage his experience in enterprise AI strategy, responsible AI governance, platform innovation, and digital transformation to support the company’s healthcare technology ambitions. His appointment comes as healthcare organizations increasingly invest in artificial intelligence to enhance clinical decision-making, improve operational efficiency, and deliver better experiences for patients and providers.
The appointment reflects UnitedHealth Group’s continued emphasis on expanding its AI capabilities as it works to accelerate innovation across its healthcare services and technology operations.
