Shoppers urged to take action to claim cash from $32m 'fake pricing' settlement – The US Sun
The money is being handed out by Synta Technology Corporation to settle claims it conspired to fix telescope prices.
Synta is a manufacturer of telescopes and optical components headquartered in Taiwan.
Celestron is one of its best-selling telescope lines.
But Synta has been accused of conspiring to unfairly raise telescope prices, with shoppers claiming they had to pay more for telescopes than they otherwise would have.
The settlement benefits consumers who purchased a Celestron, Orion, Skywatcher, Zhumell or Meade telescopes between January 1, 2005, and September 6, 2023.
These purchases must have occurred while the buyer was located in specific states – more than two dozen are listed, including New York, California, Florida and Massachusetts – according to the class action lawsuit.
Synta has not admitted any wrongdoing but agreed to pay $32 million to resolve these allegations.
While the amount awarded to each class member has yet to be determined, each claimant will get an extra $3,000 in “service awards”, as per the order.
To receive the benefits, class members must submit a valid claim form by May 20, 2025.
The deadline for exclusion and objection is Feb. 13, 2025.
The final approval hearing for the settlement is for April 3, 2025.
