Data breach impacts thousands of current, former state employees – Hawaii News Now

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – The state is investigating after a data breach compromised the personal information of thousands of current and former employees.
The Hawaii State Judiciary confirms that personal data of individuals employed by the Judiciary from June 2021 to the present may have been improperly accessed, impacting approximately 2,600 individuals — about 1,700 current employees and 900 former employees.
According to the state, the data included names, addresses, social security numbers, and birth dates. No bank account information was in these files.
The Judiciary says on Friday, Oct. 4, its IT security system detected the breach of an employee’s email inbox containing files with information for Judiciary employees used for payroll processing. This employee was authorized to have this information.
The breach was contained within a day and limited to these files only, the Judiciary said.
A notification letter was sent to affected employees Tuesday advising them to register for free fraud alerts with the three major credit bureaus.
The state’s IT team and security vendor continue to investigate. Questions may be sent via email to PAO@courts.hawaii.gov.
