Additionally, Governor Jim Justice recently updated his special session agenda to include a proposal for a 5-million-dollar investment aimed at expanding child care services in West Virginia.
Del. Kayla Young, D-Kanawha, a vocal supporter of the bill, expressed optimism about its potential impact.
“It’s really hard for families to access child care as it is, and it’s quite expensive,” she remarked.
Young underscored the importance of enhancing access and reducing costs to ensure families can secure quality care while parents are at work.
While she acknowledged that this bill alone wouldn’t fully address the issue of center closures, she viewed it as a step in the right direction.
“It’s going to take a multi-pronged approach, but we’re moving forward,” Young said.
“There’s still much more work to be done, and we need to support businesses, families, and employers.”
However, not all lawmakers are in favor of the bill. Del. Elias Coop-Gonzalez, R-Randolph, was one of three delegates to vote against it, citing concerns about potential inequities.
“I’m worried that this bill might favor one demographic over another,” he stated.
Coop-Gonzalez proposed exploring alternative solutions that could provide more comprehensive benefits, such as raising the standard deduction to give parents greater flexibility in how they manage child care expenses.
As the bill heads to the Senate, the ongoing discussions underscore the pressing need for comprehensive strategies to tackle the complex challenges facing child care in West Virginia.
