The Ministry of Home Affairs has recalled the Chief District Officers of Dhading and Kavre, citing their lack of preparedness in disaster risk management.
The ministry has assigned Suman Ghimire, a joint secretary, as the new CDO of Dhading and Umesh Dhakal as the CDO of Kavre. According to ministry spokesperson Rishiram Tiwari, both officials have been directed to assume their responsibilities as soon as possible.
Rajendra Dev Pandey, the CDO of Dhading, and Surya Prasad Sedhai, the CDO of Kavre, were recalled to the ministry amid complaints of inadequate disaster management.
Despite heavy rainfall warnings, vehicles travelling towards Kathmandu through Dhading were not halted. On Friday night, a landslide at Jhaplekhola on the Tribhuvan Rajpath buried three vehicles, killing at least 35 people.
Since Thursday, Kavre has also seen significant loss of life and property due to landslides and floods triggered by continuous rainfall. The worst-hit areas include Roshi, Temal, Panauti, and Bethanchowk municipals.
As of Sunday evening, the death toll in Kavre alone had reached 66, with local authorities facing criticism for their slow response to the disaster.
