A letter to my 100 year old self about artificial intelligence

Dear Future Me,

I hope this letter finds you well, and that you are enjoying the many advances that have occurred since I wrote this letter in 2023.

I imagine that by now, you have experienced many remarkable changes in technology and society, and I am curious to know how things have evolved.

The advances in general artificial intelligence must be hard to imagine.

One thing that I am certain has remained the same is the importance of family and community.

No matter how much technology advances, human connection will always be a fundamental part of our lives.

However, I can only imagine how much technology has transformed the way we interact with each other and the world around us.

I am curious to know how you stay connected with your loved ones, and how the advancements in artificial intelligence have impacted your daily life.

2045: The emergence of General Artificial Intelligence

Speaking of artificial intelligence, I cannot fathom the extent to which AI has transformed our world.

By now, I imagine that AI and robotics have become so advanced that they can do all non-creative work.

There are already experiments with universal income nowadays to ensure that everyone has access to basic necessities.

I am interested to learn how this policy was implemented, and how it has affected the way society operates.

Moreover, I am intrigued by the way we have adapted to living with AI and enhanced humanoids and robots.

Policies must have put in place to ensure our safety and that of these machines.

I am curious to know how we have coexisted with these machines, and how we have learned to trust them.

There are predictions that general General artificial intelligence, or AGI, the concept of AI that possesses human-like intelligence and consciousness will become a reality in our lifetime.

The year 2045 would me my best guess.

There have been many popular predictions about the development of AGI, including the possibility of achieving the singularity:

A hypothetical moment when AGI surpasses human intelligence and becomes capable of recursively improving its own intelligence at an exponential rate.

AGI Evolves – the Singularity Emerges

The singularity has been popularized in science fiction, with writers and filmmakers imagining a future where humanity is either threatened or enhanced by the emergence of AGI.

Some people believe that the singularity is inevitable, while others view it as a distant possibility or even a complete fantasy.

Those who believe in the singularity argue that the exponential growth of AI will eventually lead to the emergence of a super-intelligent AI.

This being would solve all of humanity’s problems, from disease to climate change.

However, others warn of the dangers of AGI that could pose an existential threat to humanity, as depicted in movies like “The Terminator” and “The Matrix”.

Max Tegmark, author of “Life 3.0”, argues that we must take a proactive approach to shaping the development of AI to ensure that it aligns with our values and goals as a society.

He believes that we must prioritize safety measures to prevent the emergence of a rogue AGI, and establish clear ethical guidelines for the development and use of AI.

Tegmark’s argument is that we must not only focus on the development of AGI but also on the consequences and impact of its development on society.

It is crucial to consider the potential risks and opportunities presented by AGI, and to shape its development in a way that benefits humanity as a whole.

One of the most remarkable changes that I imagine has occurred is the eradication of all diseases, including cancer.

I am sure that this was made possible by the significant advances in medical technology and artificial intelligence.

Enjoy the next 100 years!

Finally, I am fascinated by the idea that we may one day upload ourselves and become part of the general artificial intelligence.

What would this mean for our society and our understanding of what it means to be human.

I cannot wait to see what the future holds and to learn about all of the incredible advancements that have occurred in the past half century.

I hope that you and your family are happy, healthy, and enjoying all that life has to offer.

Best regards,

Carsten Krause
