The government has opted for a selective approach in implementing the recent investigative report, leading to the arrest of high-profile political figures while shielding administrative officials for the time being.
Authorities on Saturday arrested former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and former Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak.
Currently held at the Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital due to health concerns, the government intends to extend his remand via video conference to avoid moving him.
He is, currently, detained at the police station and has already been presented before the court to extend his remind.
Despite being named for action in the initial Council of Ministers meeting, former Home Secretary Gokarna Mani Duwadi and former Kathmandu Chief District Officer Chhabilal Rijal have not been taken into custody.
The Ministry of Home Affairs issued specific directives to proceed only against the political leadership. The government’s current policy grants a reprieve to security personnel and civil servants, pending further review.
To address the allegations against officials like Duwadi, who is retired, and Rijal, who remains in active service, the government plans to form a new panel to specifically review the cases involving employees and security agencies.
The legal action will not move forward until this committee submits its formal recommendations.
This strategy highlights a deliberate shift, prioritizing political consequences while deferring administrative discipline to a later review.
