OpenAI adds interactive STEM learning visuals to ChatGPT | ETIH EdTech News – EdTech Innovation Hub

OpenAI has launched a new interactive learning capability in ChatGPT designed to help users explore math and science concepts through dynamic visual explanations.
The update allows learners to manipulate variables and see relationships change in real time, turning abstract formulas into interactive models.
The feature is rolling out globally to logged-in ChatGPT users across all plans. OpenAI says the initial release covers more than 70 core math and science concepts commonly studied by high school and college students.
The move reflects the growing role of AI tools in supporting STEM learning, homework assistance, and exam preparation for students, parents, and educators.
The new capability allows ChatGPT to present interactive visual modules alongside explanations when users ask about certain math and science concepts.
Rather than relying only on text responses, the system can now display graphical models that allow users to adjust variables and observe how those changes affect formulas, graphs, and outcomes.
OpenAI says the feature currently supports more than 70 topics. These include concepts such as the Pythagorean theorem, Hooke’s law, Coulomb’s law, exponential decay, compound interest, and the ideal gas law (PV = nRT).
Learners can also explore formulas such as the surface area of a cone, circumference of a circle, trig angle sum identities, and slope–intercept form by manipulating variables and seeing the results immediately.
The goal is to help learners move beyond memorizing formulas and instead explore how mathematical and scientific relationships behave.
In a LinkedIn post announcing the update, Leah Belsky, Education at OpenAI, wrote: “Learning math and science with ChatGPT just got more interactive.”
She pointed to the scale of demand for learning support on the platform, writing: “Every week, 140M people come to ChatGPT and ask for help understanding math and science concepts.”
Belsky also highlighted challenges many families face when supporting learning at home: “These are some of the hardest subjects to teach, to learn, and to help with at home. Students often get stuck memorizing formulas without really understanding why they work.”
Research cited by OpenAI suggests that visual and interactive learning approaches can support stronger conceptual understanding for many learners.
Lauren Haber Jonas, Head of Youth Well-Being at OpenAI, also shared the announcement on LinkedIn, writing: “Today we’re making it easier—and more interactive—to learn math and science concepts with ChatGPT through new dynamic visual explanations.”
She referenced research indicating widespread difficulty with math among adults, writing: “A recent Gallup survey showed that more than half of U.S. adults said they struggle with math—and many parents don’t feel confident helping their teens learn it.”
OpenAI says early testing included feedback from students, parents, and educators.
Parents reported that the interactive visual modules helped them work through problems alongside their children in a more intuitive way. Students in high school and college also said the feature helped them understand how variables relate to one another in mathematical and scientific formulas.
Educators involved in early feedback highlighted the potential of interactive tools to support deeper conceptual understanding.
Anjini Grover, a high school mathematics teacher, says: “What stands out is how strongly this feature emphasizes conceptual understanding. When learning math, understanding why something works and how ideas connect helps concepts stick long term.”
She adds: “I especially appreciate how it doesn’t stop at the original question but actively prompts you to extend thinking and explore deeper connections.”
The interactive visual explanations build on other learning-focused capabilities already introduced in ChatGPT.
These include study mode, which guides users through problems step by step, and quiz tools designed to help learners strengthen recall and prepare for exams.
OpenAI says the new feature is the beginning of a broader effort to expand interactive learning experiences in ChatGPT across additional subjects.
The company is also conducting research into how AI affects learning through initiatives such as NextGenAI and the OpenAI Learning Lab. OpenAI says findings from these programs will inform future product development and research into how AI tools shape learning over time.
The ETIH Innovation Awards 2026 are now open and recognize education technology organizations delivering measurable impact across K–12, higher education, and lifelong learning. The awards are open to entries from the UK, the Americas, and internationally, with submissions assessed on evidence of outcomes and real-world application.
