OAKLAND, CA — Roughly 13 million Kaiser Permanente patients are eligible to collect funds from a $46 million class action settlement, the Oakland-based health care company announced.
The settlement, which received preliminary court approval, is the result of a 2024 class action lawsuit compiled from several different suits. The suits allege that from November 2017 to May 2024, Kaiser’s websites and mobile apps used a third-party tracking code to transmit confidential personal and health information without member consent to companies like Google, Meta, Microsoft, and X. Data included names, medical histories, IP addresses, and internal communications.
Kaiser denies these allegations, but said it is agreeing to the settlement to avoid “risks, delays, and costs of further litigation.”
How to file a claim
Members must submit a valid claim form by March 12, 2026. All affected members will receive an email containing a member ID number necessary to complete the form. Emails are sent from “Settlement Administrator” with the subject line “Notice of Proposed Class Action Settlement- Kaiser Privacy Breach Settlement.”
If you do not receive such an email but believe you are eligible, you can request an ID number from the settlement website.
You can also designate a payment method, such as direct deposit, Venmo, PayPal, paper checks, or credits at retailers like Amazon or Target.
Each claimant can expect roughly $20-40, according to the Bay Area News Group, though this depends on how many people file claims.
