HPE leads alliance to build scalable quantum supercomputer – IT Brief Asia

HPE has brought together a group of eight technology organisations to form the Quantum Scaling Alliance, aimed at making quantum computing scalable and useful for practical, industrial applications. The alliance includes 1QBit, Applied Materials, HPE, Qolab, Quantum Machines, Riverlane, Synopsys and the University of Wisconsin. The initiative is helmed by Dr Masoud Mohseni from HPE Labs, with John Martinis, a 2025 Nobel Laureate and CTO of Qolab, as co-lead.
Consortium focus
The alliance has set out to develop a cost-effective, industry-scale quantum supercomputer. By leveraging expertise in quantum research, supercomputing, semiconductor engineering and electronic design automation, the group aims to bring quantum computing out of the laboratory and into enterprise operations. The goal is to shift quantum from proof-of-concept demonstrations to applications that address pressing industrial and scientific challenges.
Collaborative expertise
Each organisation brings a specific set of strengths to the project. 1QBit contributes on quantum error correction and simulation, Applied Materials on semiconductor fabrication, and Quantum Machines on hybrid quantum-classical control systems. HPE leads the integration of quantum capabilities with classical supercomputing and networking, a move intended to accelerate the transition to practical use. Riverlane adds expertise in error correction, Synopsys provides simulation and semiconductor IP, and the University of Wisconsin develops quantum algorithms and benchmarking methods.
Industry applications
The alliance’s members believe quantum computers will open new possibilities across several sectors. Anticipated areas of impact include materials research, drug discovery, optimisation of manufacturing processes, and post-quantum security systems. The consortium framework allows for shared expertise and resources, which is expected to speed up progress and address obstacles more effectively than isolated efforts.
Hybrid integration
HPE’s involvement centres on combining quantum computing with high-performance classical systems. The company expects that scaling quantum technology through this kind of hybrid platform will make it more viable for real-world deployment. This convergence is planned to enable the handling of complex workloads not manageable by today’s computer architectures alone.
