Strategy must be grounded in data: Moore to the Point – Upstate Business Journal

Ribbon cuttings don’t build economies. Data does.
Too often, communities measure progress by photo ops and new-company announcements. Those moments matter but they rarely tell us if incomes are rising, talent is staying or local businesses are thriving. Without that lens, we keep playing by the old rules, chasing headlines and incentives to lure companies from elsewhere rather than building real strength from within. Only by grounding strategy in real data can we create a playbook that works for today’s economy and builds for the future.
The new playbook builds on what came before but points us forward. It is grounded in data, not anecdotes, and shifts the focus from activity to outcomes like per capita income, talent retention and homegrown business growth. This does not mean abandoning the old strategy. Communities should continue to seek outside investment and jobs. But too often the balance is off, with recruiting and incentives getting most of the attention while the new playbook of talent — entrepreneurship and innovation, where the real leverage lies — remains underfed.
When guided by facts, communities can focus less on short-term recruitment wins and more on long-term capacity, building strong talent pipelines, nurturing high growth founders and creating an environment where innovation takes root. Here is where it gets interesting. Much of what really drives a modern economy happens out of sight, things like:
These investments don’t make headlines, but they build a place where talent wants to live and founders want to stay. Data, not photo ops, will reveal the real progress.
Lasting prosperity cannot be recruited. It must be built. That is the new playbook.
