SEOUL, Oct. 27 (Yonhap) — A special counsel team said Monday it seeks to question the head of the anti-corruption agency this week over allegations linked to a widening probe into the death of a young Marine in 2023.
Special counsel Lee Myeong-hyeon’s team said it will likely call in Oh Dong-woon, head of the Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials (CIO), for questioning as a suspect sometime this week.
Oh is accused of failing to notify the Supreme Prosecutors Office for nearly a year when a CIO official became subject to a criminal complaint in July last year, as required by law.
Lawmakers of the Democratic Party had filed the complaint against Song Chang-jin, a former CIO senior prosecutor, for allegedly lying under oath at the National Assembly.
Song said at the time he did not know that Lee Jong-ho, a former investment firm chief, was involved in the case surrounding the Marine’s death. Song has been accused of lying as he served as Lee’s lawyer before joining the CIO.
Lee’s team suspects Oh belatedly informed the prosecution to allegedly delay an investigation into the case.
In a text message sent to CIO officials last week, Oh said he believed the issue could be sufficiently explained.
