Technology changing on Canadian side of St. Lawrence Seaway – WWNY
IROQUOIS, Ontario (WWNY) – Steve Marks loves to go with his family to see ships on the St. Lawrence River.
“This is a good sign of spring once the seaway opens,” he said.
The 2025 opening of the seaway comes with improvements. The St. Lawrence Seaway Management Corporation is investing $170 million into parts of the shipping channel, including the Iroquois Lock northeast of Ogdensburg in Ontario.
“Here at the seaway, we have a reliability rating of 95.5 percent. What does that mean? It means when ships come through the system, the system is up and running, and that’s what we’re here to do, so these upgrades ensure that reliability,” said Nicole Giroux-Laplante, media relations manager, SLSMC.
The St. Lawrence Seaway is investing in new technologies at the Iroquois Lock. One is hands-free mooring. When a ship uses the lock, vacuum pads suck onto the ship to hold it in place. It means the corporation will rely less on manual labor and the job becomes safer.
“A lot of work was done over the winter cutting the slots, installing the rails, and then installing the units,” said Giroux-Laplante.
Hands-free mooring should be ready to be used there by the end of spring. In total, $350 million will be invested on the Canadian side of the seaway through 2027.
