CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY – The Environmental Management Bureau (EMB) of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources has declared the city’s sanitary landfill compliant with environmental standards following recent upgrades.
In an interview Wednesday, EMB Region 10 Director Reynaldo Digamo Jr. said the improvements mark a significant step in restoring the landfill to its intended sanitary condition.
Key upgrades include the installation of a High-Density Polyethylene liner, which enhances leachate filtration and prevents soil and water contamination.
“With the proper containment system in place, we can ensure that waste disposal in Cagayan de Oro remains environmentally safe and sustainable,” Digamo said.
The upgraded Chamber 3 of the landfill, located in Barangay Pagalungan, 17 kilometers from the city center, now meets national environmental regulations and supports the city’s sustainable waste management goals.
Digamo also noted that 33 of the 93 local government units in Northern Mindanao are currently served by operational sanitary landfill facilities. (PNA)
