Wondering what Fiona Apple and Tracy Chapman might be? Not sure what “soft rock” refers to? Don’t worry, because I’m here to help you with the answers for today’s NYT Mini crossword.
The NYT Mini is a quick and dirty version of the newspaper’s larger and long-running crossword. Most days, there are between three and five clues in each direction on a five by five grid, but the puzzles are sometimes larger, especially on Saturdays.
Unlike its larger sibling, the NYT Mini crossword is free to play on the New York Times website or NYT Games app. However, you’ll need an NYT Games subscription to access previous puzzles in the archives.
To help you avoid getting stuck and having to reveal missing letters, here are the NYT Mini Crossword answers for Thursday, January 30 (spoilers lie ahead, of course):
1 Across: Soft rock – TALC
5 Across: First-string squad – A-TEAM
7 Across: Soft rock? – MAGMA

Completed New York Times Mini crossword for Thursday, January 30
It took me 1:22 to complete today’s NYT Mini.
I struggled slightly with this one. I only got the last two answers on the Across side on my first pass. But not quite as I thought 8 Across was “paper.” Oddly enough, enough letters matched the actual answer that I was able to get TAMPA and CAMEO. It was only when I got to MASS that I realized “paper” incorrect.
It took me a few seconds to puzzle out TALC. The rest of the words fell into place after that.
