After an outstanding season that culminated in a runner-up finish, VfB Stuttgart is facing significant challenges. The club finds itself in the midst of a transformation.
The 2024/2025 season promises numerous highlights for VfB Stuttgart, including Bundesliga, DFB-Pokal, and Champions League action, alongside multiple international call-ups. However, the departures of Waldemar Anton, Hiroki Ito, and Serhou Guirassy have also ushered in a personnel overhaul.
Consequently, VfB had to practically reinvent itself over the summer. Such a transformation is not an overnight process. In today’s professional environment, the importance of “Change Management” is paramount during periods of change. This concept refers to the implementation of selected measures aimed at profoundly altering departments or the entire organization, guiding it from an initial state to a defined target state.
For VfB, a defined target state this summer could have been articulated as “established top club in the Bundesliga.” According to psychologist and social scientist Kurt Lewin, such change processes can be categorized into three phases, as described in his model from the 1940s: Unfreeze, Change, and Refreeze.
In the Bundesliga clash against Bayer Leverkusen, standout Alexander Nübel rescued a point for VfB Stuttgart. The goalkeeper was the hero after the match ended in a 0-0 deadlock.
As of Saturday, November 2, 2024, at 14:00, the SWR1 Baden-Württemberg Stadium witnessed Nübel’s heroics.
After nine matchdays in the Bundesliga, it is clear that VfB Stuttgart is currently in the second phase of its transformation. With 13 points, Sebastian Hoeneß’s side has established itself in the upper half of the table, achieving a respectable, if not stellar, record. In the DFB-Pokal, the Schwaben progressed to the Round of 16 with a 2-1 victory over FCK, while their Champions League record includes one win, one draw, and one loss. Whether this will suffice for a place in the Bundesliga’s top tier remains to be seen.
However, the development is promising: the scoreless encounter against Bayer Leverkusen demonstrated that VfB has made further strides in its transformation phase. A strong Alexander Nübel secured a point for the Schwaben against a dominant defending champion. “That was a fortunate point for us. But we won’t apologize for it. We’ll take it just as it is,” said Hoeneß after the match.
Nübel mentioned that it was likely the weakest performance from VfB against Leverkusen in recent memory. However, none of those thrilling encounters had ended in victory for Stuttgart. A sense of realism regarding results has settled in for VfB. Even their recent game against promoted side Holstein Kiel (2-1) was tightly contested. It may not be the grand spectacle often witnessed last year, but it is indeed successful.
Next up for VfB is Atalanta Bergamo. The ‘King Class’ encounter showcased the potential for thrilling football; Stuttgart displayed this with a stunning 1-0 victory against Juventus Turin, dominating the Italian champions. On Wednesday, November 6, 2024, the Hoeneß team will face another significant opponent, with the kick-off against the Europa League winners at 21:00.
After a free weekend, VfB Stuttgart will be back in motion come Monday. The second phase of the “Change Process” still contains several developmental steps ahead. Kurt Lewin would certainly agree with that.
