Hammer supports Agrifirm with digital strategy exploration – Consultancy.eu

Dutch agricultural cooperative Royal Agrifirm Group worked together with boutique consulting firm Hammer during the development of its digital strategy.
“Digitalization is an important theme in the agricultural sector and highly relevant to Agrifirm. Therefore, we wanted to accelerate in this area,” said Harrie Vollaard, Strategy & New Business Manager at the Royal Agrifirm Group.
In order to realize a viable digital strategy, Hammer searched for insights that can be leveraged from five digital leaders in the agricultural sector in Europe, the US, and Asia. Thorough research into these digital models and their characteristics was followed by a series of interviews with different representatives responsible for the development of the platforms.

“With regard to the digital strategy you can pursue, there are all kinds of essential questions. For instance: what is the underlying business model, what would be your go-to-market strategy, what are you planning to do yourself and what are you going to outsource. We wanted to get a better understanding of that,” said Vollaard.
The expert interviews conducted allowed Hammer to better understand the findings uncovered during the initial open-source research phase. The two research methods resulted in a valuable overview of the digital frontrunners’ platforms, which included information like how the platforms are organized, the sizes of investments, and how many people are involved in the projects.
Hammer’s findings allowed Agrifirm to better understand the challenges and pitfalls of developing and launching a digital platform for farmers. Overall, the analysis was instrumental for Agrifirm in concepting its digital future.
Hammer is a Dutch consulting firm – working with both domestic and international clients – that specializes in market research and intelligence. The firm’s client Agrifirm, founded in 2010, is a cooperative of over 10,000 Dutch farmers and horticulturalists.
Digitalization in the agricultural sector has taken off in recent years, particularly in Europe. Technologies like the internet of things, artificial intelligence, and robotics have been increasingly useful to farmers and agribusiness in a variety of use cases like harvesting real-time data, monitoring livestock and crops, and reducing workloads through automation, among many others.
