RICCIONE, Italy: Dentsply Sirona (DS) World Italy took place in Riccione from 29 to 30 September at the Palacongressi as part of an international series of conferences organised by the world’s largest dental company. It was the first Italian show of the series to take place since 2019, owing to a long interruption caused by the pandemic.
The event numbers communicated by the company are truly impressive for an Italian dental event at this time. A total of 1,400 dental professionals were in attendance, 52 speakers from Italy and abroad gave presentations and workshops, and 730 m2 of exhibition space housed company stands and 35 demonstration areas.
Themed “The patient at the centre of the digital workflow”, the event hosted five pre-conference courses, two plenary sessions and six specialist sessions. The company serves both clinics and laboratories with its products and services, and DS World participants represent the breadth of dental practice. On-site in Riccione were general dentists, implantologists, orthodontists, periodontists, endodontists, prosthodontists, dental hygienists and dental technicians from all parts of Italy—and not all of them were Dentsply Sirona customers. Participants were able to test products and protocols in the hands-on areas and receive assistance from product specialists.
There was a great desire to discuss topical issues with peers, to listen to the speakers and ask them questions and to spend time in the large exhibition hall, the centre of which featured a completely digital examination area that was powered by the new DS Core platform. It could be said that what was on show in Riccione represented a true dental revolution.
The DS Core platform conforms to all the requirements of privacy, confidentiality and data security—as specified in the concluding speech by the company’s managing director for Italy, Pierluigi Violati—and manages the entirety of a practice’s digital workflows. This allows dental professionals to dedicate themselves exclusively to their clinical activities. The cloud-based system, which can be accessed by subscription, addresses the needs of the patient, the clinician and the laboratory by integrating software into a single platform. Providing easy and effective access to data and technology, DS Core is a tool that points to the future of telemedicine. It also allows remote diagnosis of equipment problems.
The new digital strategy presented by Dentsply Sirona places the patient at the centre, from diagnosis to the end of treatment. Thanks to the reduction of chair time and the greater predictability of treatment results, patients can access better, more personalised and more economical dental care.
The DS World Italy 2023 programme included 38 clinical presentations, covering smile design, tooth restoration and replacement, DS Core, production and CEREC. Participants were able to choose the sessions in which they participated and could therefore personalise their experience based on their interests.
After the Saturday sessions, the congress participants returned to the plenary room for Violati’s closing remarks. He said that the dental industry, like many others, currently finds itself in a time of continuous innovation. Change is difficult and must be managed, and consequently, training is a crucial part of Dentsply Sirona’s overarching strategy. Through the DS Academy, Dentsply Sirona has provided training to 490,000 dental professionals around the world, educating them on the best ways to use the company’s products and on increasing the sustainability of the dental practice. DS Academy has physical locations in various countries—in Verona in Italy, for example—but now also has a digital e-learning platform developed in collaboration with Dental Tribune International.
As DS World Italy came to a close, congress moderators Drs Massimo Gagliani and Dino Re spoke about a forthcoming survey of digital trends at more than 500 dental practices in Italy. The first results, they said, highlight how digital technology has become a focal point at many clinics; however, many dentists still use the technology according to analogue methods. This point was also discussed by a number of speakers, including Drs Mario Semenza and Costanza Micarelli, who said that many dentists still talk about impression taking rather than digital scanning. At the close of the event, Dr Marco Toia, outgoing president of the PEERS professional exchange initiative, awarded the second PEERS Clinical Case Contest prize to Dr Antonio Salierno.
In addition to appreciating a rich scientific programme, those attending company conferences look forward to getting together in the evenings. In Riccione, the crowning event was an exclusive dinner party organised by Dentsply Sirona. Grandiose in its adoption of a 1920s, Great Gatsby-era aesthetics, it was a night of pure fun, led by extraordinary musicians. The evening concluded with dancing, which was enjoyed by all.
