Marshall achieved a record year in royalties, increased social media presence in 2022-23
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall’s Rodney Kasey has been promoted to the position of Associate Athletic Director of Digital Strategy and Brand Management.
Kasey, who joined Marshall in July 2022, has led Marshall’s rise in branding through merchandising and social media over the last 14 months, taking Marshall Athletics to another level in term of scope.
“I’m super-excited for Rodney,” said Marshall Director of Athletics Christian Spears. “He has proven to be someone who can be relied on to do great work while exceeding expectations. Acknowledging our best and brightest and elevating them into new opportunities is important to sustaining our success.”
Through Kasey’s work in solidifying Marshall’s branding, Marshall Athletics has seen a record-setting rise of 16 percent in royalties, which was recognized by Collegiate Licensing Company.
Kasey was also heavily involved in Marshall’s negotiations with CLC that ended in a new multi-year deal for licensing and branding services.
“In just one year, Rodney helped grow our licensing revenue by 16 percent and was instrumental in renegotiating our multi-million dollar deal with CLC,” Spears said.
In May, Kasey also represented Marshall University at the CLC Seminar in Dallas, Texas, joining with some of the country’s top branding officials to brainstorm ideas on how to take Marshall’s collegiate brands to the next level.
In addition to his work in enhancing Marshall Athletics’ brand, Kasey has also wholistically grown Marshall’s social media presence during his tenure through strategic combinations of video, photography, graphics and data that both entertain and inform for Marshall’s 18 sports teams.
“This promotion is extremely well-deserved,” said Debra Boughton, Marshall’s Executive Associate Athletic Director for Championship Planning and Resources. “Rodney’s leadership in the creative space is second-to-none and his eye for branding has immediately elevated our department. I’m excited for every next idea that Rodney comes up! Our student-athletes, coaches and fans won’t want to miss his next idea, either!”
Kasey’s passion for his craft and presence within the Marshall community has also built a pathway for the future at Marshall University with the creative team benefiting from a major boost in student involvement within the last year.
This partnership gives Marshall students a hands-on experience in the field and also helps connect them with their university while helping Marshall Athletics boost the brands of the university, the athletics department and its student-athletes.
“I am honored to work with great people on the best brand in all of college athletics,” Kasey said. “I look forward to our team taking Marshall to the next level.”
Prior to Marshall, Kasey served as Assistant Athletic Director for Creative Media and Student Development at Bluefield University, his alma mater.
The Virginia native played men’s basketball at Bluefield University before moving on to receive his Master’s degree in Administration/Management from Liberty University.
After receiving his Master’s, he returned to Bluefield where he served his alma mater as an assistant basketball coach from 2015-19 while also serving as the City of Bluefield Parks and Recreation’s Director of Athletics/Membership Marketing Coordinator from 2016-19.
